Every challenge is an opportunity. All it takes is a visionary leader to see that challenge, understand it’s potential and turn around things for those who are willing to tread the road less travelled.
Dr. Vinod K Chaturvedi, an expert fellow and devoted spokesperson of the ‘Second Green Revolution’, saw the tremendous potential of the hitherto unexplored, unorganized and marginalized food-processing sector. He envisaged a future where India’s food-processing industry would come of age using organized procurement, milling and distribution. He put together world-class technology, state of the art equipment and ushered in a new trend in India’s agro business space. On June 20th, 1996, Dr, Vinod Chaturvedi set up Usher Agro, a public limited company, with the objective of milling processing and exporting of basic food products. The first paddy mill, with a production capacity of 10,800 MTPA was set up in his hometown Mathura. Since then, there was no looking back. Focusing on rice as the primary product Usher Agro diversified into bran, wheat, pulses and husk. Its wheat products include fine and superfine wheat flour (maida), r-aata, whole meal aata (chakki atta) and bran (choker).
Today, Usher Agro has three rice and wheat milling and processing units, two in Mathura (UP) and one in Buxar (Bihar) totaling to a production capacity of 13,35,540 MTPA. The company is catering to Indian tastes as well as has customized its offerings as per International market requirements. Usher Agro’s growth map was carefully laid on the foundation of the team’s ability to capitalize on new ideas. The vision extended to create Usher Eco Power, a subsidiary of Usher Agro, to set up an eco friendly power plant in Chhata, Mathura, for captive use, using rice husk as raw material. Living up to it’s legend as a path finder, Usher Agro has successfully commenced it’s first Silica plant at Chhata, Mathura, to produce eco friendly green silica at a competitive rate.
Thus, besides being focused on business, the company’s strong and cohesive beliefs system has made itself transparent, customer oriented, quality conscious and socially responsible.
Usher Agro’s strength as a group can be attributed to the following four factors.
Location Advantage: Usher Agro plants are located across UP and Bihar. These two states, along with the neighboring Haryana, constitutes 19.41% of India’s total rice production and 53.2% of total rice and wheat production in India respectively. This makes our procurement system faster and cost effective. Similarly our strategic positioning next to rice deficit states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, gives us logistical advantage in the distribution process.
Large Rice Milling Capacity: Usher Agro has a total rice milling capacity of 1,81,440 MTPA. This is not only exemplary but also the largest in the country for non-basmati rice. We take pride in the fact that Usher Agro owns one of the largest single location rice milling plants in India, producing 9,72,000 MTPA.
Automated and Modernized Plant and Storage Facility: Usher Agro has installed fully automated system comprising of high tech machineries manufactured by global brands like Satake Corporation, Japan and Machinery Zaccaria, Brazil. This has resulted in increase in output and better-cost effectiveness.
Strong Distribution and Procurement Network: Usher Agro takes pride in setting up one of the strongest distributors/agents/traders network comprising of 45 cities across India. We have a strong procurement network with presence in over 100 mandis. Exclusive agents (Pukka Arahtiyas) in each of the mandis who procure raw materials for our plants at competitive rates.
Our export distribution network is spread across UAE, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Benin, Ghana, Mozambique, Kenya, Malavi, Italy, Holland, Israel, UK and Canada.

YAMUNA CLEANING MOVEMENT IN THE CITY OF MATHURA
The river Yamuna has played an integral part in the history of India’s agricultural civilization. It is one of the most prominent rivers of India. About 1370 kms long, Yamuna originates at the YAMUNOTRI glacier in lower HIMALAYAS in UTTARAKHAND district. Yamuna has huge religious importance. The environment of Yamuna along its long course is fabulously endowed with natural bounties. Importance of the river is increased by several canals, which irrigate vast tracts of lands of India. It has sustained many civilizations and cities for ages.
Unfortunately Yamuna has become one of the most polluted rivers in the world due to huge pollutants being discharged in it. Many efforts have been made to clean Yamuna; however they have been unable to bring any improvement due to lack of dedication, sincerity, and commitment.
Usher Agro has taken the initiative of transforming river YAMUNA from becoming a sewer into a pristine river as it was in the past. To achieve this “S A Y E S” (SAVE YAMUNA ENVIRONMENT SOCIETY) has been formed & initiated. The NGO led by the company is dedicated to the clearing up of the riverbed. The dug up residue will be used for land filling activities.
- Firstly a dredger will be deployed to periodically clean the sewage brought downstream and settled in Yamuna bed in Mathura section thereby removing major solid pollutants.
- Public awareness drives to raise awareness about the harmful effect of dumping non-biodegradable waste unscientifically in the vicinity of the river Yamuna.
- City‘s daily discharge will be collected in a main pipeline running parallel to Yamuna river. This pipeline will be laid along the riverbank. This in turn will be carried downstream beyond Gokul barrage and into a sewage treatment plant. Treated water will be used for non-human use and solid will be used in landfill or other common uses.
- Direct injection of Oxygen into YAMUNA at the right time and at the right place per day by a vessel built with this purpose is also envisaged.
- As an additional source of Oxygen, an installation will be built to store and release Hydrogen Peroxide as and when necessary.
HOW USHER AGRO IS TAKING LEAD IN THIS MOVEMENT
- Driving association with technology partners.
- Ensuring involvement of local people.
- Laying out detailed plan and execution process.
- Escalating the issue at government and administrative level to mobilize further funding.
FUTURE OF 'SAYES'
It is proposed to further beautify both banks of YAMUNA and its ancient Ghats and make them ecological and people friendly so that religious tourists find it pleasant to pause there, soak in the spiritual, natural environment and find it spiritually fulfilling. In the process, the economy of Mathura will get a boost and the government will achieve revenue growth. In short, a win-win situation.
